5 Things You Can Do in 10 Minutes to Feel Healthier

This blog was provided by Alison Jacobson from The Safety Mom.

For those of us who love summer, getting through the winter can be tough. Not only is it hard to stay in shape (when you have three layers of clothing on does it really matter if you’ve put on a few extra pounds?) but with less sunlight it’s harder than ever to feel energized.

Whether you’ve made it a New Year’s goal to be healthy or you simply are trying to get through the winter blues, here are some quick and easy ways to stay healthy physically and mentally:

1. Aromatherapy

Whether you’re looking to reduce stress, ease a headache or increase your energy using essential oils can do the trick. Many essential oils are known raise energy and generally stimulate the body and mind. The best essential oils for giving yourself an energy boost include black pepper, cardamom, cinnamon, clove, angelica, jasmine, tea tree, rosemary, and sage. Some of the best essential oils that have been connected to reducing headaches and migraines are peppermint, eucalyptus, sandalwood, and rosemary essential oils. Burn an aromatherapy candle, take a hot shower with essential oils or massage some onto your temples and relax for a few minutes.

2. Drink water

If you’re feeling sluggish there’s a good chance you’re dehydrated. Our bodies are made up of 60 percent water so even a little dehydration can have a big impact. Studies of men and women have indicated that less than a 2 percent rate of dehydration can impair mood and concentration, increase anxiety and fatigue and cause headaches. Take a break from work and drink some water.

3. Get up and move

A change of scenery is sometimes all you need to re-energize or calm down after a stressful interaction. Along with emotional well, ess the physical benefits of even a 10-minute walk shouldn’t be underestimated. Six hours of sitting restricts blood flow to your legs, which may up your risk for arterial disease, a precursor for heart attack or stroke. Just 10 minutes of walking may protect you, a new study shows.

4. Do a clean sweep

It seems as if everyone has a cold or the flu right now and being indoors with windows closed increases the likelihood of germs spreading. Wipe down high-touch items such as remote controls, door knobs, light switches, keypads and microwave handles and buttons in the office break room.

5. Meditate

Rather than checking your phone first thing in the morning, give yourself 10 minutes to meditate and start off the day calm and focused. That’s because meditation stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system, slowing your heart rate and breathing rate, and improving blood flow. So, the next time you need to deal with a difficult teen, a demanding client or a rude driver you’ll be able to shake off the frustrations and better deal with life’s challenges.
